Handyman or Contractor

Where to Draw the Line: Handyman vs. Contractor

Is there anyone who hasn’t heard of a general contractor or handyman? These two are pretty well-known, especially if you are a homeowner. However, do you know which is better for the tasks as opposed to the other?

There are significant differences between the two, and these are listed below.

A Handyman‘s Job

A handyman is a jack of all trades. Most have no formal training or licensure. The hardworking person will use their experience and know-how to do a range of small-to-medium sized home repairs.

They will know just enough about plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and a host of other trades and can take care of anything from leaky faucets to a jammed window and a mountain of yard debris that needs addressing.

Often, a handyman has one or more specialties, ranging from interior painting to pressure washing. However, because a handyman has no credentials to take on larger and more complex projects, that individual’s talents are better for smaller projects.

A handyman can take care of household chores you either don’t feel able to do or don’t have time to do. A handyman also charges less than a general contractor and works alone, which means they have few overheads.

General Contractor Jobs

Contractors are, in contrast, completely different. One reason is that they work with in-house crews or sub-contractors. They have qualifications in their trades through either apprenticeships, trade school or community college, or, in some cases, a combination of the three. Plus, most possess licenses and certifications also.
